Malin Kundang

A long time ago, there was an old widow with her son, named Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang grew up as a skillful boy. He always helped his mother. They lived in a hut in the village near the sea. They were very poor. They earned money as a fisherman helper.

One day Malin Kundang met a success sailor.

“I hope I’ll be a rich man like him” Malin Kundang prayed. Then, Malin Kundang walked to the sailor’s ship. Malin Kundang was interested to join the him for a sail.

“Hey, boy! What are you looking for?” a success sailor asked. Malin Kundang walked to the sailor’s side.

“Nothing, I’m just interested to look into your ship. It’s the biggest ship I’ve ever seen. Could I be a helper for you?” Malin Kundang asked.

“Of course you can. Three days later, we will sail overseas. You can join us.” A success sailor said.

“Really?.. thank you.. thank you so much.. I will tell my mother.” Malin Kundang said happily.

Then, two days later Malin Kundang asked his mother,

“Mother, What if I sail overseas? , if i still stay here i will always be a poor man, whereas I want to gain a success life, mom!”

Malin Kundang’s mother said nothing.

“Mom, two days ago I met a success sailor. He allowed me to join him for a sail. I will get  much money if I join him.”

Malin Kundang’s mother didn’t agree. But, she knew that Malin Kundang was right. So she let him go.

“Okay son, if you really want to go, I can’t stop you. I just can pray for your safety and your success life. But, promise me that you will come home!” Malin Kundang’s mother said.

In the next morning, Malin Kundang was ready to go.

“Take a good care, son.” Malin Kundang’s mother said.

“You too mom, take a good care too.” Malin Kundang said to his mother.

Before Malin Kundang stepped to the ship Malin Kundang’s mother hugged him tightly like she never want to let him go.

After Malin Kundang had left, his mother went to the beach every day. She asked the captain of the ship whether he saw her son or not. But she got no news about Malin Kundang. She hoped her son would come home soon. There were so much wishes that Malin Kundang’s mother gave to him. She was so missed him.

After years, when she was very old, a captain of a ship told her,

"I met Malin Kundang some months ago. He is now married to a beautiful girl. She is the daughter of a rich man." Malin Kundang's mother was very happy to hear that.

"Thank you, God!" She prayed. She was sure that Malin Kundang would come home.

One day, Malin Kundang’s mother was surprised by an arrival of a big ship in the pier that Malin Kundang left his mother before. When the ship finally pulled over, Malin Kundang’s mother saw a young couple who stood on the dock. They wore beautiful clothes.

“It must be Malin Kundang” Malin Kundang’s mother said.

Malin Kundang's mother cried joyfully.

"Malin Kundang! My son! You are home!" she hugged Malin Kundang.

But Malin Kundang was angry.

“What!!.  you’re not my mother, you are just a poor women, just get out here!!!”

Malin Kundang’s wife said angrily to him when she saw  Malin Kundang’ mother,

"Why didn't you tell me that your mother is poor and old?"

“No.. no.. no.. she’s not my mother..!” Malin Kundang denied.

He was ashamed to admit his mother to her wife. So he kicked his own mother,

"Go away, ugly woman. My mother does not look like you at all."

Malin Kundang’s mother fell on the ground. She cried. Then she prayed “Dear God, if he is not my son, let him have a nice journey, but if he is, curse him become a stone”

Then, the wind blew so hard and a thunder storm came. Malin Kundang’s ship was wrecked. He was thrown by the wave out of his ship on a small island. Suddenly, his body turned into a stone. He was punished for not admitting his own mother.

From the story we can learn that “As a child, we should never forget all parents services especially a mother who already raise us, Don't become a rebel. Insubordinate to the parents is a big sin that will be borne by our self.”
